Reiki (pronounced
"ray-key") is of Japanese origin meaning Universal Life Force.
Rei means universal -
that energy which is all-encompassing and all around us. It is
spiritual knowledge or wisdom, the God-consciousness which is all
knowing.
Ki is the life force
energy that flows through all forms which are alive. It is also
called Chi, Prana or the life force. We receive Ki from the air we
breathe, sunshine, food and water, and meditation. The flow of Ki
around us is responsible for our health experiences. When the flow
of Ki is disrupted in some way the physical body is adversely
affected and responds by a reduction in function and harmony.
Negative thoughts and feelings restrict the flow of Ki,. while
positive, loving thoughts create a powerful energy flow. Negativity
collects in various areas in the physical body, restricting Ki, and
creating a situation inviting illness and injury because the area is
weak.
Ki flows within the body
through the pathways called meridians and nadis, which connect our
chakras, also called wheels of light. It also flows around us in
our energy field or our aura. It is the free and balanced flow of
Ki which enables us to have good health. Disruption of this flow is
the main cause of ill health.
When a person receives a
Reiki treatment, the Rei- or God-Consciousness part of the energy
assesses where the person has blocks and then directs the healing
energy, usually the block that is nearest the hands. However,
sometimes it will go to the block that is most important even if it
is far from the hands. The Reiki energy then works with the
negative thoughts and feelings that are blocking one's natural flow
of Ki to help bring the natural flow of Ki back into harmony.
